Bluetooth Not Working on Windows? Causes and Fixes | Etuu Technologies

Bluetooth is commonly used to connect wireless headphones, keyboards, mice, speakers, phones and other devices to Windows computers. However, Bluetooth can sometimes stop working or disappear completely from Windows.

If Bluetooth is not working on Windows 10 or Windows 11, the problem could be caused by a disabled Bluetooth adapter, outdated drivers, Windows services, incorrect settings or a hardware issue.

In this guide, we explain the most common causes and how to troubleshoot them.

Why Is Bluetooth Not Working on Windows?

There are several reasons why Bluetooth may stop working:

  • Bluetooth is turned off
  • Airplane mode is enabled
  • Bluetooth drivers are outdated or corrupted
  • The Bluetooth adapter is disabled
  • Windows Bluetooth services are not running
  • A recent Windows update caused a driver problem
  • The Bluetooth device is not properly paired
  • The computer does not have Bluetooth hardware
  • The Bluetooth adapter has developed a hardware fault

Let’s look at how to troubleshoot these problems.

1. Check That Bluetooth Is Turned On

Start with the simplest solution.

On Windows 11:

Settings → Bluetooth & devices

Make sure Bluetooth is switched on.

You can also press:

Windows + A

and check the Quick Settings panel for the Bluetooth option.

If Bluetooth is completely missing, continue with the steps below.

2. Check Airplane Mode

Airplane mode can disable wireless communication, including Bluetooth.

Go to:

Settings → Network & internet → Airplane mode

Make sure Airplane mode is turned off.

You can also check the Quick Settings panel by pressing:

Windows + A

3. Restart the Computer

A simple restart can resolve temporary Bluetooth and driver problems.

Restart Windows and then check:

Settings → Bluetooth & devices

If Bluetooth returns after restarting, the problem may have been caused by a temporary Windows or driver issue.

4. Check Bluetooth in Device Manager

Device Manager can help determine whether Windows can detect the Bluetooth adapter.

Right-click the Start button and select:

Device Manager

Look for:

Bluetooth

Expand the section and check whether your Bluetooth adapter appears.

You may see manufacturers such as Intel, Realtek, Qualcomm or MediaTek.

If the adapter is disabled

Right-click the Bluetooth adapter and select:

Enable device

If there is a yellow warning icon

A yellow warning symbol can indicate a driver or hardware problem.

Right-click the adapter and select:

Properties

Then check the Device status section for an error message.

5. Update the Bluetooth Driver

An outdated or corrupted Bluetooth driver can prevent Bluetooth from working correctly.

In Device Manager:

Bluetooth → Right-click the adapter → Update driver

Select:

Search automatically for drivers

You can also download the latest Bluetooth driver directly from your computer manufacturer’s website.

For example, laptop manufacturers such as Dell, HP, Lenovo and ASUS provide device-specific drivers.

It is generally better to use the driver intended for your exact computer model.

6. Uninstall and Reinstall the Bluetooth Driver

If updating the driver does not work, you can reinstall it.

Open:

Device Manager → Bluetooth

Right-click the Bluetooth adapter and select:

Uninstall device

Restart the computer.

Windows may automatically reinstall the driver after restarting.

If it does not, download and install the appropriate driver from the computer manufacturer’s support website.

7. Restart the Bluetooth Service

Windows uses background services to manage Bluetooth functionality.

Press:

Windows + R

Enter:

services.msc

Press Enter.

Look for Bluetooth-related services, such as:

Bluetooth Support Service

Right-click the service and select:

Restart

You can also open Properties and check whether the service is configured to start automatically.

8. Run the Windows Bluetooth Troubleshooter

Windows includes troubleshooting tools that can help identify common Bluetooth problems.

Go to:

Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters

Look for the Bluetooth troubleshooter if it is available on your version of Windows.

Follow the instructions and allow Windows to apply any recommended fixes.

9. Remove and Re-Pair the Bluetooth Device

Sometimes Bluetooth itself is working, but the connected device has a pairing problem.

Go to:

Settings → Bluetooth & devices

Find the problematic device and select:

Remove device

Then put the Bluetooth device into pairing mode and select:

Add device → Bluetooth

Follow the instructions to pair it again.

This can resolve problems with wireless headphones, keyboards, mice and speakers.

10. Check Whether Your Computer Has Bluetooth

Not every desktop computer has built-in Bluetooth.

If Bluetooth does not appear anywhere in Windows, check the computer’s specifications to confirm that it includes Bluetooth hardware.

For desktop computers without built-in Bluetooth, you can add Bluetooth using a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter or another supported expansion device.

11. Check for Windows Updates

A Windows update can sometimes introduce or resolve driver compatibility problems.

Go to:

Settings → Windows Update

Select:

Check for updates

Install available updates and restart the computer.

If Bluetooth stopped working immediately after a major update, check whether the Bluetooth driver is compatible with the current Windows version.

12. Check for Hardware Problems

If none of the software troubleshooting steps work, the Bluetooth adapter itself could have a hardware problem.

This is particularly worth investigating if:

  • Bluetooth suddenly disappeared from Device Manager
  • The computer has suffered physical damage
  • The wireless card has recently been replaced
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are both experiencing problems
  • The computer cannot detect any Bluetooth adapter

For laptops, Bluetooth is often integrated into the wireless network card, so a problem with the wireless adapter can sometimes affect both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Bluetooth Still Not Working?

Bluetooth problems can be caused by anything from a simple disabled setting to a faulty driver or hardware component.

Before replacing hardware, check the Windows settings, Device Manager, drivers and Bluetooth services.

If you are managing several computers in an office, recurring Bluetooth and driver problems may also indicate the need for better IT asset and device management.
